Heartworm Protocol
We feel that less is more when it comes to heartworm protocols. Our goal is to avoid future health problems by an appropriate heartworm schedule. Heartworm medications are not actually a preventative method. When taken, they kill any possible heartworms that may have infected your pet in the past 60 days. Since heartworm is transmitted by mosquitoes, it is important to protect your pet during the warmer months if you live in an area where mosquitoes are present. With this in mind, we recommend Heartgard Tablets to be given (after a negative heartworm test) in July, September, and November. That is only 3 doses per year in Michigan. If you’re doing more, you’re doing too much! Please talk to us to help you make this important decision for your pet.
Side Effects of Heartworm medication may include:
Vomiting
Depression
Lethargy
Itching
Hives
Depressed Mood
Convulsions
Loss of Appetite
Skin Congestion
Diarrhea
Weakness
Please let us know if your pet is experiencing any of these symptoms after taking heartworm medication.
